Resolved Question: Please critique my story?
Before you read it, though the start sounds Hunger-Gamey, it really isn’t. Basically, Robbie, the boy in the story, had his father and older sister killed by the President and his servants, known as the Men (they are all male). Anyway, it is set in the future, about one hundred and twenty years after a nuclear war. From the nuclear war rose two countries, these are both in Europe (most of the rest of the world is destroyed or uninhabitable). The two countries are- UC (United Countries) which is relatively poor but apart from that is quite democratic etc; that covers all of mainland Europe. There is also Cassian, which is the British Isles, where the President (no last name is known) rules. Here, every twelve year old enters the Labyrinth. Your goal is to get to the centre, facing half-animal-half humans, fire, bullet sprays and stuff like that. At the centre is a gold coin, and you need to make your way back from it. To get the gold coin, you have to kill the Minotaur- which is a robot machine. if you ‘kill’ it, then all the weapons etc; are shut down, so you can get back safely. Anyway, that comprises of the first foive chapters.
If they think you have good survival or fighting skills in the Labyrinth, you are pressed into the army. It is not exactly a fighting army, but it could mean you become one of the Men, or you become a spy/scout for Cassian, in the UC. That’s the rest of the story. No romance, no tickets being drawn, no Hunger Games. So here’s the first part of the story-
The Labyrinth is what we all fear, and what we all go to. Every child will go there. Every child will come out, walking, hobbling or in a coffin. And now it’s my turn. No one wants to talk about it. Some of them can’t remember it- they aren’t old, they just… blank it out.
We don’t know when they’ll fetch us. It could be at school. It could be in our homes. It could be on a walk to the shops. We’ve seen them alright. With a smart black suit, tinted glasses, black vans. We heard them too. Where I live, gunshots don’t make us turn or run. They’re part of life.
If we see them, we lower our gaze and stop our work. No one wants to disrespect them. Disrespect is taken seriously over here. Gallows are at every corner, and the President won’t let us appeal.
The Men are his messengers, his workers, his assassins and his colleagues. They break up fights and riots, they guard the banks and palaces, they are at every school, every office, every factory. They watch, silently, just staring motionless at the people. Any problems, and they’ll shoot. I’ve seen it before. I don’t want to see it again.
My mother doesn’t want me talking about the Men. She’s convinced the President has cameras watching us. And you know what? I wouldn’t be at all surprised. But I couldn’t care less. Right now, life is like hell, so dying won’t make a difference.
But I still won’t talk to my mother about them. Whenever she hears their name, she shudders noticeably, and her eyes freeze. She’ll sit there, in her own private world. Private torture, really. I know why, but I don’t understand. I don’t think anyone can understand unless they’ve been there. I was just a toddler when it happened, so I can barely remember it.
It was Lily, see? In a way my mother hates me, I think, that I should be alive- and Lily shouldn’t. I’ve grown up knowing Lily was cleverer than me, faster than me, better than me. If I ever won a prize, Lily had done one better. That doesn’t mean I hate her, but I can never like her
.
She was eight years older than me- twelve. She’d be an adult now, about twenty, maybe with her her own house, her own life. Eight years is a lot to separate two siblings, I guess.
They came for her, the Men. I remember playing in the yard, amongst the dust, with some old wooden trucks and toys, crudely painted and all of them chipped or broken. A few other children were scattered around, drawing or writing in the dirt with a stick, playing with the smooth stones, a few of them tumbling around throwing punches at each other. Some mothers were out too, hanging out the washing on the trees, laying them out to dry on the bushes, scrubbing at potatoes with such viciousness no one could approach them without a shiver of fear. One man was outside too, chopping wood on an old tree stump, his axe big and worn with age.
The scream was the first sign of the Men. All the children stopped what they were doing, to be bundled inside, tugged away past the doors, looks of terror on their faces. They left the toys, the sticks, the axe, the wood, the peas- everything. Nothing mattered, if only they could save their child’s life.
Thank you Blank Page and Anna.
To Anna- I hadn’t thought of that. I haven’t read Battle Royal actually, but the idea sounds good. Would it work if only people born in a certain month would enter it (the month would be picked at random each year). I’d like it so that the boy had his sister killed in the Labyrinth, so it would be nice if an idea could include that.
To Blank Page-
1. What is the government’s reason for taking the children to the Labyrinth?
I guess it is a form of control ‘we can kill your children as we please’. It also is a way of getting army and Men members.
2. If it was so emotionally scarring, why do the adults have children to jeopardize them?
I’m really not sure. In books like the Hunger Games, people still have children. I think everyone has children because its a natural feeling ‘I want kids’. Either that, or you get benefits for your children? If you got benefits in a poor (all poor but for the President, the Men and Pres

Resolved Question: Was it constitutional for FDR to criminalize possession of gold?
In 1933, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102, which outlawed the private ownership of gold coins, gold bullion, and gold certificates by American citizens, forcing them to sell these to the Federal Reserve. As a result, the value of the gold held by the Federal Reserve increased from $4 billion to $12 billion between 1933 and 1937. This left the federal government with a large gold reserve and no place to store it. In 1936, the U.S. Treasury Department began construction of the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on land transferred from the military. The Gold Vault was completed in December 1936 for US $560,000, or $8.5 million in 2009 dollars. The site is located on what is now Bullion Boulevard at the intersection of Gold Vault Road.
The first gold shipments were made from January to July 1937. The majority of the United States’ gold reserves were gradually shipped to the site, including old bullion and newly made bars made from melted gold coins. Some intact coins were stored. The transfer used 500 rail cars and was sent by registered mail, protected by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Resolved Question: Writers!! Do you this opening is a good start? Advice please?
Cheers
Anna hid under the floorboards, peeping through the cracks above her. She saw the glinting silver blade make a light scratch across her mother’s throat. Watching in terror she focused as the pressure became firmer across her mother’s skin, beckoning for it to tear open.
In front of their fireplace, her mother’s hands were clasped together and raised above her head. She cried in horror, and pleaded to the strange man in red and silver armour to leave the household and spare her family’s lives.
“We are simple farmers, we know nothing of history. We harvest food and sell it to those who need it. Please we have done nothing wrong, let us be.”
Anna turned to look at the man; his armour reflected the flames from the fire place. The flickering movements danced upon his chest-plate, almost cheering him on to kill. He grabbed her mother’s neck firming his grip upon her skin.
“Do not lie to me! I am no fool and I will kill you. You have one more chance, give me the first born and I will spare your son and husband’s lives.”
Her mother’s voice grew weak as she struggled to stay calm amongst the chaos;
“I told you I have but one son, there are no more children!”
Anna saw the man’s expression suddenly turn furious. She firmly pressed her hand across her mouth to prevent herself from screaming. Her eyes widened in panic as the man tugged her mother’s hair back, fully exposing her neck. The tip of his sword pressed against her jugular, aching to seal her fate.
“You’re a filthy and soulless Darkian! If you shall not tell me where the first born is, then I shall tear this house apart until I find them!”
Within minutes Anna’s floor was painted in her family’s blood. Her ears became numb from the shrieks and cries of her brother and mother, as the man’s blade ripped open their flesh. Her eyes filled with tears blurring her vision, making only the flames in the fire visible. Merged together in colour, the red and orange flames waved in front of her gaze, imitating the pattern of the waved blood along the floor.
The man took his sword and slit open her mother’s dress, exposing her chest. He knelt down on one knee and traced his hand across her throat. A gold chain hit his fingertips, revealing a tear-shaped pendant encrusted in sapphires. He quickly ripped the chain from her mother’s neck and wrapped it in a blood stained tissue.
The house went dark as the man kicked the cauldron in anger, extinguishing the fire. The door slammed and Anna quickly opened the trap door, racing over to her mother. In desperation she shook her shoulder as her cries grew stronger. Growing frantic she carried on, but her mother didn’t respond.
She stopped and found herself engrossed in the thudding of the horses gallop as the man rode away. Its rhythm felt as if it mocked her mother’s stilled heartbeat. As the sound grew faint, she looked into her mother’s eyes and held her hand. Anna knew her family died to protect her, and she must leave the house immediately. Grabbing her satchel and some coins, she raced out of the back door into the night.
