Open Question: could i have bought a fake sword?
a short time ago i bought what i was told is a new fully functional ‘ mortuary sword ‘ from a medieval website online . im happy with the sword , its a nice piece of metal , i was told it wasn’t a wall hanger , but a real active sword.

just yesterday i got an answer from someone in relation to my question :

” The shipping issue is something else entirely…most Postal Services will NOT carry a sharp sword. Too many liability issues. Unless it is properly packaged and scabbarded, even most courier services won’t for the same reasons.
You also have to consider two more items…a sharpened sword is also more susceptible to rusting, and 99 of 100 swords sold on the ‘net are “fake”…even those claimed to be “live” swords. They are simply poured into a mold and then are filed to remove flaws and semi-sharpen when they cool. So, they look like swords, but they are not made like swords. (Katanas bought on-line are particularily infamous for this.) ”

this answer really deflated and depressed me

what could he have meant by a fake sword ?

i emailed him and asked him to explain further what he meant and he replied with this :

” hi there
Message: Hey…what I mean by a “fake” is that it is most likely simply a “poured” blade instead of a forged blade…essentially they make a blade and tang shaped mold. A “real” sword is forged with a hammer and anvil.
That all being said, remember…if you’re not going to be going into sword battles with it, it’s perfectly fine.

In fact, most Martial Artists you see using weapons use “fakes” in their katas…a) they’re OBSCENELY cheaper, and b) they have about the same weight & heft characteristics. In other words, they’re designed to a specific purpose, and that isn’t killing people.

- i appreciated this message , but i feel down about my sword , the dealer / queries person said i had bought a ” fully functional sword .

does this mean i dont have a real sword or i have a sword that cant do what a real sword can ?
