Resolved Question: Insurance on loose diamonds in Canada?
I have been searching lots and can’t seem to find a straight answer. I’m sure that the man who did an appraisal on the loose diamond I purchased said that I could not get insurance on the individual diamond itself, but only if it was set in actual jewelry. I have found straight answers on this in the States but not for Canada. Can I get insurance on a loose diamond in Canada? And if so, which places offer this, and what is the best quote?

I just got engaged, and I want to insure my ring. I looked into my renters’ insurance policy and it does not provide coverage, so I will need a separate jewelry insurance policy.
Does anyone who has gone through this process before have any suggestions about how to best shop around for a good policy? What should I look for as far as policy terms, etc? How much of the ring’s value should I expect to pay in the premium? Do all policies require an appraisal of the ring, or can I pick a dollar figure I want to insure it for? Any specific company or policy suggestions?

I need to sell my engagement ring from a past relationship (he ended it and was married a month later with a baby on the way…I have no guilt about selling this) and have had a few bites by trying to sell it on Craigslist. I am tired of people seeming interested then never emailing back so I was thinking of selling to a jeweler. One told me they’d give me 1/2 the value of the appraisal but this was in store credit and I’d have to spend the same amount of cash in order to use this. I found this almost insulting. Is there a good jewelery store that will give me reasonable cash for this? I live in the Boston/New Hampshire area. Thanks!
