Paques and Hercil had been sitting under an enormous large beech tree the road for almost three hours, and by midnight, Paques was quite certain the fabled Poison Cart was not coming. He was also convinced that he and Hercil were not the only ones waiting for the cart. Though he hadn’t actually seen anyone else near the road, he was pretty sure he had heard rustling and a hushed voice or two in the thicket to the west. Crickets sang tonelessly from a hidden pond nearby, and an owl hunted overheard, but there was no sign of movement on the road.
Paques was about to suggest they try waiting in a different location when the distant sound of hoofbeats reached his ears. Hercil stood up immediately, tugging on his long gray beard unconsciously. For the first time it struck Paques that Hercil was just as nervous as him to meet the legendary Poisonmaster.
The hoofbeats grew closer, and from around the bend in the road, a donkey appeared, pulling behind it a small, covered cart. Hercil’s gray eyes shone with anticipation as he watched it approach. Paques had seldom seen his old friend so excited, and the effect made him even more apprehensive.
Paques had been right in guessing they were not the only ones awaiting the arrival of the little cart; as the donkey slowed to a stop, figures began detaching themselves from the deep shadows of the trees all along the road. He guessed there was thirteen in all.
“Lets go,” Hercil whispered, hurrying out from under the tree and onto the road. As they approached, the cart door opened with a bang and the Poisonmaster stepped out. He was both uncommonly tall and uncommonly thin, with a billowing black cloak and a small bald head. Without a word, he placed his long hands on the carriage and removed one of the black wooden panels, revealing a secret compartment big enough to hide a body. The compartment was magically illuminated in order to reveal its contents of hundreds of tiny glass bottles, stacked neatly in rows of all shapes, sizes, and hues. Paques edged closer hoping to get a better view of the sparkling collection. By now the others were crowding around the cart trying to push their way to the front of the line.
“Do you have any tasteless poisons?” a large, bearded man inquired, “Something that would go unnoticed in water?”
The Poisonmaster grinned wickedly, revealing long yellow teeth, and carefully chose a tiny bottle of crystal clear liquid. He then held up four fingers. Paques wondered if the eerie specter of a man could speak.
“Four silvers then?” the bearded man confirmed. But the Poisonmaster shook his head.
“What, four gold pieces? You must be joking!” But he seemed to know better than to argue with the strange peddler, and, grudgingly, he paid the full price. Within seconds he was replaced by an elderly woman in a traveling cloak.
“I need a bottle of sleeping poison.” she asked in little more than a whisper. “Ten years strong, if you have it.”
Paques listened to the unsettling orders with morbid fascination. It was no wonder The Poisonmaster was so difficult to find.
