Resolved Question: I have an unidentified gold colored inaugural JFK coin I would like help identifying?
The coin itself is approximately 1 and 1/16 inch in diameter and 1/16 inch in width. The edge is smooth and there is no indication this was created to be legal tender of any form. While I’m no jeweler or collector, the metal appears to be lighter in color than regular gold coins. I’ve been told it could be brass or something similar, though it’s weight suggests it is plated with something quite heavy in the middle.
On the face it has the words “35th PRESIDENT U.S.A” across the top, “JOHN F. KENNEDY” at the bottom, the year “1961″ on the left side, and his face/neck/upper shoulder in profile viewed from the left with a smile (unlike the US Half Dollar).
On the back there are only words. From the top to the middle it reads: “JFK”, just below that reads “HARVARD GRADUATE” and “NAVY 1941-1945″. From the lower middle to the bottom it reads: “Congress 1947-1953″ and “SENATE 1953-1961″. Scrolling along the bottom reads “INAUGURAL JAN. 20th 1961″.
Can anybody help me identify this?
