Open Question: As banks behave in ever riskier ways — Fundamental Question: Tangible versus Paper Investments?
OBAMA & COMPANY have been busily patching together a 2700-page deficit-swelling healthcare bill (for basically an entire year!), and EVEN NOW continue to push it EVEN AFTER Teddy Kennedy’s seat fell to a dark-horse Republican. With little else to show for a year in office.
IN THE MEANTIME, the country has silently embarked on a cycle wherein hi-roller banks use borrowed money to take massive risks – and when the risks go wrong, the banks rely on taxpayer bailouts from the government. See for example…

[Or maybe there is a financial super-elite who INTENDS to rock-the-boat like this for their own gain?]
I DO NOT BELIEVE that Congress or the Obama administration is going to implement effective regulation of these banks, because the banks and corporations now have WAY TOO MUCH influence in Washington.
IT WOULD SEEM that the risk of another global-scale banking crisis [whether "accidental" or "intentional"] is real and considerable.
OK, thanks for reading this far, here is my QUESTION:
WHAT PERCENTAGE of your investments do you now hold in tangible form [free-and-clear real-estate, gold, diamonds, coins, grade-A antiques/collectibles, etc], as opposed to paper-denominated assests that could disappear instantly in a full-blown, all-out collapse?
If it is small, are you thinking of increasing the percentage, and by how much?
Or is this all just going to blow over and everything will be fine “don’t worry be happy”?
To the respondent who suggests that concerned citizens buy bullets instead of silver or gold:
In the Great Depression (which I would consider as an example of a deep collapse), many who relied on paper securities (stocks etc) lost their fortunes overnight, whereas those who had gold, silver, etc. did not.
Although many jumped out of windows, there was never any need for anyone to buy bullets. So I am mystified by the suggestion that I buy bullets. I think most average Americans are more civilized and saner than that.
One further thought: Buying silver and gold is a political statement that the banking system has become too greedy and too corrupt to support anymore.
Resolved Question: the value of a 1857 1/2 dollar california gold coin?
this coin is in a setting for a necklace but is beautiful shape! Please someone help us with an approximation of the value. Was made over 50 years ago as a gift.
thank you in advance.
Open Question: What’s a good currency system for a fiction novel?
I’m working on a novel and I need to find a good currency system that’s simple and good for a fantasy novel in a time of Kings, Knights, pirates, etc. Something like the way Ramond E Feist’s Midkemia functions.I would prefer something that uses copper, silver, and gold. But I would need to understand the worth of the coins to properly know what something in my story should cost. I don’t know any currency system but US. I have already looked at Doubloons, pounds, shillings etc but I don’t understand them and as I said, I would rather have something simple that involves copper, silver, and/or gold. Does anyone happen to have any idea the system that Feist uses? I don’t know the price of what something would cost in a medieval based time either so I need a system that I can research to find its worth within that time frame.
Please help.
